Start your morning with a stretch
Sometimes when I know I have a busy day planned, I make sure I start with a stretch. Being able to get on the floor with my yoga mat and my dog helps me find the clarity I need to start checking things off of my list. I keep a notebook next to me so I can quickly jot things down as they come to mind.
If you’re looking for a healthy way to clear your head, try a morning stretch in the sun. This helps to release tension in your muscles, which can alleviate physical stress on your body. Additionally, the act of stretching promotes relaxation and activates the body's relaxation response, reducing overall stress levels to a functioning level.
Here are a few more reasons why you should start your day with a stretch:
Mood improvement: Stretching stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural mood-boosting chemicals in the brain. These endorphins help to enhance feelings of happiness, reduce anxiety, and improve overall emotional well-being.
Mind-body connection: Stretching encourages you to be present in the moment and focus on your body. This mindfulness aspect of stretching can help you disconnect from intrusive thoughts, worries, or distractions, promoting a sense of calm and mental clarity.
Increased energy and alertness: Stretching increases blood flow and oxygen supply to your muscles and brain, providing a revitalizing effect. This can help improve your energy levels, mental alertness, and cognitive performance.
Relaxation and sleep quality: Engaging in stretching, especially gentle stretches before bed, can help promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. It can calm the mind, reduce racing thoughts, and prepare your body for a restful night's sleep.
Self-care and self-awareness: Carving out time for stretching is an act of self-care and self-nurturing. It allows you to prioritize your well-being, create a positive connection with your body, and cultivate self-awareness and self-compassion.
Confidence and body image: Regular stretching can improve flexibility, posture, and body awareness. This can contribute to an enhanced sense of body confidence, self-esteem, and a positive body image.
By incorporating stretching into your routine, you can experience the mental health benefits that come with it. It can be a simple and effective way to support your overall well-being and promote a healthier mind-body balance.
